Zero Discrimination Day and Its Significance

Discrimination continues to affect the lives of millions of people around the world. March 1 is Zero Discrimination Day, an annual worldwide event that promotes diversity and recognizes that everyone counts.

Zero Discrimination Day underscores how people can become informed about and foster inclusion, compassion, peace, and, above all, a movement for transformation. Gender, nationality, age, disability, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion, language, or any other status should never be a reason to discriminate.

Zero Discrimination Day this year is observed under the theme “Save lives: Decriminalise.” The UN emphasizes scrapping harmful laws that boost discrimination. Zero Discrimination Day is aimed at creating a global movement of solidarity to end all forms of discrimination. It also aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all of the member countries of the UN.

Discrimination at work, school, and health care, and other settings lessens people’s capability to partake thoroughly and meaningfully in societies and provide and care for themselves and their families.

Governments and global leaders must endorse comprehensive social and economic growth. They must eliminate unfair laws, policies, and practices in order to safeguard equal opportunity and diminish inequalities for a beautiful world.
