World Refugee Day 2021
The United Nations' (UN) World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year. This event honors the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
The theme of the World Refugee Day of this year is “Together we heal, learn and shine”. The theme focuses on giving access to health care and medical support donating to the university scholarships of seven promising young immigrants changing their lives, and help refugees by letting the artistic side shine.
A refugee crisis is difficult to deal with, but the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, reminds us that ‘the problems are war and hatred, not people who flee.’ World Refugee Day is about raising awareness of the situation and showing the refugees that together we can work to end the crisis and help displaced people to find safe and happy homes.
World Refugee Day sheds a light on refugees’ rights, needs, and hopes, aiding in mobilizing political will and support so that refugees will not only flourish but grow. Although it is critical to protect and strengthen the lives of refugees on a daily basis, international days such as World Refugee Day serve to draw public attention to the plight of those fleeing wars or persecution.
The vastness of the world refugee crisis can be hard to grasp, but raising awareness can help make it easier for others to understand the extent of what refugees around the world are going through. It also builds a sense of empathy and compassion that brings people together from all walks of life, and that’s always a positive thing.
