Growing Vegetables in the Sack Transforms Quader’s Life
Md. Quader Mia is a dedicated farmer and an invaluable member of the Doel Women's Development Association of the Community Empowerment Project (CEP), Daulatpur, Manikganj. His journey in agriculture took a transformative turn after participating in a climate-tolerant agriculture training organized by ADRA Bangladesh. Before this training, Quader struggled with conventional farming methods and had limited knowledge about innovative practices that could enhance his yields and income.
The training provided him with essential skills and insights into modern farming techniques, particularly the method of growing vegetables in sacks. Inspired by what he learned, Quader decided to put his new knowledge to the test and planted 32 sacks of cucumber seeds. This innovative technique allowed him to optimize space and resources while ensuring a healthy crop.
The results were remarkable. Not only did Quader successfully meet the needs of his family with his harvest, but he also managed to sell 80 kg of cucumbers at an impressive rate of 50 taka per kg, generating a total income of 4,000 taka. After deducting his expenses, his net earnings reached an impressive BDT 3,600.
"Before participating in the training organized by the CEP of ADRA Bangladesh, I did not know how to grow vegetables in a sack. I found the training both interesting and useful, particularly given the prevalence of flooding in our area. The sack method provides effective protection for vegetables from the impact of floods and waterlogging. The sack method allows farmers like myself to increase our vegetable production and ensure sustainable agricultural practices," Quader unfolded the benefits of the sack method.
Quader's success story is a shred of evidence of the power of education and innovation in agriculture. His determination to learn and adapt has not only improved his family’s livelihood but also contributed positively to his community.
I intend to expand vegetable cultivation using the sack method, which optimizes the use of fallow lands and dikes. The sack method allows me to utilize every available space for vegetable cultivation, thereby increasing productivity. "Furthermore, it will increase my income," Quader outlined the advantages of adopting the sack method.
Quader now serves as an inspiration to other farmers, showcasing the potential that lies in embracing new techniques and knowledge. Through his efforts, he is not only nurturing crops but also sowing the seeds of change in agricultural practices within his community.
