International Day of Democracy 2020

The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Democracy is annually held on September 15 to raise public awareness about democracy. Diverse activities and events are held around the world to promote democracy on this date.

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed a resolution in 2007 that September 15 of each year would be observed as the International Day of Democracy. Their goal for this day is to promote the government’s role in maintaining open democracy among all member nations of the UN Charter and to celebrate the system of values democracy promotes, giving citizens the power to make decisions regarding all aspects of their lives.

The International Day of Democracy was first celebrated in 2008. The UN general assembly recognized that the year 2008 marked the 20th anniversary of the first International Conference of New or Restored Democracies, which gave people a chance to focus on promoting and consolidating democracy worldwide.

The reason why this day is celebrated on an international platform is to identify and introspect on the features that are straining the promotion of democracy. It helps assess the blocks in a system that throws democracy on the back burner and instead places aristocratic implementations in the state.

Communist countries have very different policies compared to democratic and federal lands. In the larger picture, it is usually identified that greater adherence to human rights and freedom of expression for citizens is the key to progress and development.
